WHAT IS A MUSCLE KNOT? triggerpoint.chart
A muscle knot is also known as Myofascial Trigger Point, which is particularly sensitive points in the body.  When the chronic pain doesn’t go away, the muscle can swell and harden into a bump, or “knot”.  They are most commonly found in the neck, shoulders and back.  Fibers in your muscle tissue contract causing inflammation, soreness, weakness and pain to the touch.  Some people may tell you that “it’s all in your head”, but it isn’t – knots can actually be seen on an ultrasound.

MASSAGE FOR KNOTS
triggerpoint.holdAn experienced massage therapist will know right where to locate them and will address them according to information taken the pre-session consultation with the client.  Even though the muscle isn’t tied up in an actual knot, it can certainly feel like it.  One of the goals for addressing your muscle knot with a licensed massage therapist would be to stretch and relax the contracted muscle fibers and trigger an anti-inflammatory response.  Some common techniques are cross-fiber friction, trigger point therapy and myofascial release.  Your therapist can also discuss options for self-care and managing the pain of knots that may arise between sessions.  Far Infrared Sauna therapy, along with massage, can also an effective way to address chronic knots and muscle pain.
